What's inside

  • Accounts database covering checking, savings, investment, and debt
  • Monthly snapshot log for tracking balances over time
  • Auto-calculated net worth (assets minus liabilities) per snapshot
  • Trend view showing progress across months
  • Per-account growth rate formula
  • Notes field for context on big swings (bonus, market dip, purchase)

Why it holds up

  • Add a new account any time without breaking existing formulas
  • One snapshot per month keeps the log lightweight, not transaction-level
  • Works alongside the Ultimate Monthly Budget or completely standalone
  • No linked bank accounts — your balances never leave your Notion workspace

Net worth is the number that actually matters

Monthly budgets tell you whether this month went well. Net worth tells you whether the last two years went well — and it's much harder to fool yourself about, because it's just assets minus liabilities, updated over time. This template makes that number visible without needing a linked-account service that has access to your actual bank credentials.

Snapshots, not transactions

Unlike the budget template, this one doesn't want every transaction — it wants one number per account per month: the balance as of your chosen snapshot date. That's a deliberate choice to keep the maintenance cost low enough that you'll actually keep it updated a year from now, not just the first week.

Reading the trend

The value isn't really the current number — it's the slope of the line over six or twelve months. A dip after a big purchase or a market downturn is normal and worth noting in the snapshot's notes field rather than reacting to. The dashboard is built to make the long-term trend obvious even when any single month looks noisy.

Questions people ask before buying

How often should I update this?

Monthly is the sweet spot — frequent enough to see real trends, infrequent enough that it takes five minutes, not an hour. A recurring monthly reminder in your calendar works well alongside this.

Does it handle multiple currencies?

Notion's number formatting supports different currency symbols per property, but this template assumes a single currency for all accounts to keep the net worth formula simple. If you hold significant assets in more than one currency, you'll need to convert manually before logging.

Can I track investment accounts with fluctuating balances?

Yes — just log the balance as of your snapshot date, the same as any other account. The template doesn't pull live market prices, so for investment accounts you'll check your brokerage's current balance and enter it manually each month.

What's the difference between this and the Ultimate Monthly Budget?

The budget template tracks income and spending within a month. This tracks your overall financial position — everything you own minus everything you owe — over the long term. They answer different questions and many people run both.
