How to Plan Exam Prep in Notion: Countdowns, Reading, and a Weekly Study Plan

Most last-minute cramming isn't laziness. It's that the exam date was somewhere in a syllabus, not somewhere you'd see it every day. Two weeks out feels like plenty of time, and then it's the night before. Fixing that is mostly about making the date impossible to miss and connecting it to the work that leads up to it.

Put every exam where you'll see it

Start with a small Exams database: the exam, its class, the date, and where it's held. Add a countdown that shows days remaining, and sort by the nearest date. The point is a view where the next high-stakes date is always at the top, so you notice it without having to go looking. As soon as a professor announces a date, it goes in.

Track reading so it isn't a night-before surprise

A chapter that "should have been read last week" is one of the most common ways prep goes wrong, because unread reading is invisible until you need it. A simple reading tracker for course materials, with a status per item, means you can see what's still unread while there's time to fix it, instead of discovering it during review.

Turn the countdown into scheduled sessions

Knowing an exam is nine days away isn't a plan. What helps is time-blocked study sessions attached to the specific exam or assignment driving them. When a session is linked to what it's for, the weekly plan answers "what am I studying tonight, and why" instead of "I should probably study something."

Semester Study System combines all three: an exam countdown dashboard sorted by days remaining, a reading tracker for course materials, and a weekly study planner with time-blocked sessions linked to the assignments and exams behind them. It also keeps a grade estimate per class, so you can see where an exam sits in your overall standing.

Be honest about the grade number

One thing worth knowing about any running grade estimate: it only counts work that's been graded. Early in a semester, when only one or two scores are back, the number will swing hard on each one. That isn't a bug. It's an honest read of what has actually been graded so far, not a prediction of where you'll finish.

Start smaller if you need to

If your course load is light and you mostly need to stop missing deadlines, you don't need a full system. The free Student Assignment Tracker pulls every due date into one weekly view and is a better fit. The heavier system earns its place when you're managing grade-weighted classes, real exam stakes, and enough reading that a plain due-date list stops being enough. If you're weighing the two, How to Track Grades and Assignments in Notion walks through where each one fits.
